The Southern West Virginia Photovoice Project is a component of my dissertation research. In this eight-month feminist, participatory action research project, I provided forty women in five coal-mining communities in Southern West Virginia digital cameras and asked them to take pictures to "tell the story" of their communities. We met once every three weeks to discuss their photographs, articulate common themes, and develop project ideas to address the problems they identified. We held local and regional exhibits of the women's "photostories" (photographs with written narratives) and communicated with legislators about their ideas for change.
